AFTR’ “Humboldt Swagger” Video Shows Some Body Positive Skin
Directed by ACRONYM and produced by WakeUp! Music Group, “Humboldt Swagger” brings a Body Positive message that packs a punch: “Beauty is Every Size.”
WakeUp! Music Group flipped the switch and released the music video ahead of AFTR’s ‘MAY’ EP, which is slated to release on June 29, 2020.
AFTR is a Chicago Techno gem who created a world within the beats that go to this seductive tune, one voiced with lyrics from Chicago’s own House Goddess Pepper Gomez.
Utilizing this musical landscape, WakeUp! Music Group brought back their own veteran video creator, Ami Nicole aka ACRONYM to craft a video that would be a tribute to beauty, celebrating plus sizes, and noting that no matter your height, your color, or your sexuality – that you are beautiful just the way you are.
While the song is AFTR’s pride and joy, the meaning of the music video has taken a life of its own, and become a glimmer of hope for those who see it. WakeUp! has been fielding comments from women of all ages, saying that they feel much better and more content with themselves by watching these voluptuous vixens dance with confidence, knowing how truly badass they are.
Pepper Gomez, WakeUp!’s music head, had this to say about the creation and cultivation of the project, and what it meant to her to produce such a powerful piece:
“It’s well known that music is a positive force in the arts. I get so excited every time Wake Up! Music completes a creation. I can’t tell you how much work goes into that or how many people. Our current single, ‘Humboldt Swagger (Wanna Go Down)’ by AFTR, has been an exceptionally positive project. Not only does the Techno-House music make you feel like dancing but the lyrics are more than what they seem like at the surface. The words actually represent a call to look deeper.
Our current times can often be rather judgmental and superficial in those beliefs. This approach to life has hurt many people. In fact, this approach to life is what racism is built on. As Wake Up! Music and its artists continue to bring you Nu music, I’d like to think that at the same time we are bringing Nu ideas forward and hopefully even breaking some barriers. I was extremely fortunate to be able to work with ACRONYM on the concepts of beauty that we are flooded with daily. Working with the Voluptuous Vixens for our video, I’m sure you will see that beauty cuts across all sizes and types. Our ladies are beautiful, happily dancing and are a reminder to love yourself as you are. Self love in fact is probably key in loving others…”
We took the time to catch up with each model that was showcased within the music video and talked to them about how they felt creating such a pivotal piece of media.
“Recording this video was such a memorable experience and we definitely made lasting bonds with each other. It was such a strong group of women that came together and we all built each other up the whole shoot. I cannot wait for more adventures with these ladies!”
“Once I heard the premise of this project, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. The feelings of freedom, pride, and self-love are a very important combination that can combat the stress we’re surrounded by. I’m so happy I got to be a part of this fun and powerful project. It truly shows that everyone deserves to let go and celebrate themselves. Thanks to all the ladies who came together for this. Everyone is so gorgeous and being with them was such an empowering experience!”
“Working on this video was such a beautiful experience. Everyone was professional and encouraging and I felt extremely comfortable and like I could instantly be myself. I enjoyed working with strong beautiful women that empowered me through the whole process and I can’t wait to work with them again!”
“Working on this music video was such a wonderful, and positive experience! With the world swimming in negativity these days, it was refreshing to be a part of a project that really highlighted true beauty in all senses of the word. The other ladies were so uplifting to be around, and amazing professionals! Hopefully, this video acts as a reminder to stay true to yourself, and when things get stressful, sometimes all you gotta do it dance it out.”
“When presented with the opportunity to film a music video on body equality and self-love at no matter the size, I was elated. All of my life I have been bullied and struggled with my weight, and I became so self-conscious that I was terrified of getting in front of the camera. With body positivity and self-care on the rise, we wanted to make something that meant more than just your average “hot girl squad” that paints the ideal that only ‘certain body types are sexy.’ We want to show everyone that beauty is not determined by size, and I think we nailed it. Also, for clarification, I had to step in as a dancer last minute, which was scary for myself, starring and creating, but having these amazing women by my side, I felt like I could do anything.”
The piece didn’t just impact the models. It also impacted the vocalist, Pepper Gomez. Knowing how hard it is first hand to how people will body shame others because they don’t look like advertisements and covers for magazines, the piece impacts all, not just plus size women.
“I was teased mercilessly as a girl for being too skinny, for being flat-chested, and for being smart,” says Gomez. “It was awful. Thank goodness it didn’t break me, and I filled out after having kids. So in some ways, that pain is now a positive in this project.”
It’s a comfort to everyone who worked on this release to know that the impactfulness of the material is helping people to see themselves in a more positive light, and we hope that it continues down that path, and that more people can be converted into believing that they are valid, strong, beautiful, and to not to let anyone tell you any different.
